Are Diesel Heaters Safe?

Diesel heaters are incredibly safe, provided they are properly cared for and operated within the manufacturer’s recommended guidelines. Seeing as most diesel heaters are used indoors, there is an increased risk, however, these are easily avoidable. Potential risks can include poor ventilation and fires. However, don’t let this put you off finding out why so many people love their diesel heater.

We put together a guide on how to use your diesel heater safely indoors to help put your mind at ease.

How Do Diesel Heaters Work?

How diesel heaters work is simple: the diesel is burned within the combustion chamber, creating heat and gas. This heat is then circulated to a heat exchanger, which absorbs the heat. Most generic diesel heaters will then use a fan to circulate the hot air around the room where the heater has been placed.

An Airrex heater however, takes advantage of infrared heating that warms the surfaces around it, i.e. the pipes, instead of just warming up the air. This makes Airrex diesel heaters more efficient and helps you heat the room for longer.

Do Diesel Heaters Smell?

It is natural for some sort of smell to be generated as the heater warms up, these should subside once the heater has been used several times. What should not be ignored is if you can smell diesel fumes. This could be due to poor ventilation and needs to be addressed urgently. Poor ventilation for the exhaust means you will be inhaling toxic fumes that may damage your health.

Our range of space heaters produces safe infrared without the worries of carbon monoxide. Airrex heaters only require normal levels of ventilation meaning they can be used in common workspaces such as sheds and warehouses.

How Expensive are Diesel Heaters to Run?

In the grand scheme of site machinery, you will find that diesel heaters are some of the most efficient ones you will have. Especially our range of Airrex Diesel Heaters, which can emit heat for extended periods without massive fuel usage. Thankfully, diesel heaters are more fuel efficient than their petrol-powered counterparts. Diesel heaters can be run on a range of different diesels, meaning you can use whatever is cheapest or most accessible to you.

Do Diesel Heaters Make Noise?

Older diesel heater models are likely to generate some noise, but newer diesel heater manufacturers have made strides in making their machines relatively silent. The Airrex range here at Oxdale Products for example, they use infrared radiation to generate heat and do not use fans to push the heat out. This means they generate a measly 48 decibels of noise, making them some of the best and quietest on the market.
