Flail mowers are incredibly helpful and versatile machines to have at your disposal, especially as someone who works in the agriculture sector. They are capable of clearing heavy and dense areas of vegetation with a matter of ease. But do you know how to choose the right flail mower for your compact tractor?
As is the case with any agricultural machinery, there are plenty of versatile machines, but few “one-size-fits-all” solutions. The route many choose is to find the machine that fits their compact tractor, and needs the best. We have put together this guide to help you identify which flail mower is best suited to your requirements and circumstances.
Before you pull the trigger on a brand new flail mower, there are a couple of things to consider. Once you can answer all these with confidence, you will have your answer.
Arguably, the most important factor to consider when choosing your ideal flail mower is what type of tractor you have at your disposal. As compact tractors often range in power from 20hp up to 50hp, it is key that you choose a flail that meets these requirements. If your flail falls under this, you risk damaging it; if it exceeds your tractor’s horsepower, your tractor may struggle to run it effectively, causing damage to both flail and tractor.
Flail mowers that attach to compact tractors require PTO output to function. Ensure your mower matches the output of your compact tractor. You can find your optimal PTO RPM by checking your tractor’s user manual.
Your circumstances largely dictate how you choose your flail mower. Of course, it goes without saying that you should only purchase one that you can afford or at least afford to pay off over a period. When you are totalling up the overall cost of purchase, be sure to factor in the running costs of the tractor while using the flail mower.
Additionally, choosing the best flail mower for you is based on what you need it for. Depending on the tasks you are likely to be using it for, such as general land management or heavy vegetation removal, you’re unlikely to need the same flail for both tasks. This, in turn, should narrow down your search for the right flail.
Remember, before purchasing to assess the width of whatever it is you want to remove. Ensuring you buy a flail mower that is the appropriate width to tackle it will mean you will get the job done as efficiently as possible. For smallholders with a normal amount of heavy vegetation, any flail between 1 metre to 1.5 metres will be sufficient. It is if your vegetation is particularly excessive that you may need a larger flail. For this, look for a 2 metre or 2.5 metre flail.
