What is a Flail Mower?
The core purpose of a flail mower as a piece of machinery is to cut through heavy vegetation and grass. Flail mowers for tractors run on the PTO, just like a topper would. They are designed to do the heavy cutting that a regular lawn mower may not be capable of, unlike a flail topper which is as the name suggests, just the top.
Who is a Flail Mower For?
The jobs a flail mower is usually used for are ones where vegetation is considerably overgrown, to such a point where a regular topper or lawn mower would not be able to cut through. It is worth considering a flail mower as a heavy-duty lawn mower. Many use them to level pastures.
If you have a decently sized piece of land that you wish to change the purpose of, i.e. turn it into land for farming produce, you may need a flail mower to transform it to a condition where the first steps of food production can begin.
How Do Flail Mowers Work?
They are very simple, yet effective machines. Flail mowers use the power of rotating hammers at high speed to finely cut and mulch organic matter. It is the use of rotating hammers that gives them enough power to blast through mulch and dense vegetation with ease. It is worth noting that, unlike a traditional lawn mower, a flail mower does not store any of the grass or vegetation it cuts, leaving you with the decision of whether to collect it and deposit in some sort of compost or not.
Flail mowers can be broken down into two different types, serving different purposes. They therefore work slightly differently from each other, but the theory is the same across the board.
What Types of Flail Mowers Are There?
There are two different types of blades used in flail mowers, T hammers and Y hammers. Each one is shaped like their letter denomination, giving the mower different characteristics. T hammers are good for all types of cutting, including through shrubbery and hedges. Y hammers are suited to jobs that require a large amount of mulching such as lawns and brambles.
Flail mowers typically are either push-along mowers or tractor-mounted PTO. The first is great for smaller areas that require high precision but will struggle to cover decent land if used in a field. Tractor-mounted PTO flail mowers are the most popular choice as they come with a whole host of benefits that make them easy to use, efficient and time-saving.
