Flail Mower vs Rotary Cutter: Which is Right for You

BY OXDALE PRODUCTS

When searching for the ideal solution for mowing and vegetation management, it is important to weigh up the pros and cons of both flail mowers and rotary cutters equally. Both offer their benefits, despite appearing to do very similar jobs. It is this closeness that causes a lot of confusion for those new to flail mowers and rotary cutters.

This is why we have put together this quick blog to help you work out whether a flail mower or a rotary cutter is right for you.

What Flail Mowers are For

A flail mower is essentially a heavy-duty lawn mower capable of cutting down areas of heavy vegetation, such as overgrown grass, weeds, brush, and even small branches. Their design consists of multiple blades, called flails, that rotate and effectively mulch said vegetation. They are particularly effective on uneven terrain, which is why they are popular amongst those in landscaping, farming and agriculture as a go-to tool.

When You Might Need a Flail Mower

Flail mowers excel in scenarios where your run-of-the-mill lawn mower would struggle. There are a variety of scenarios where the flail would be a particularly helpful tool to have at your disposal. These include: Paddock and smallholding maintenance, woodland management and most impressively, clearing dense and overgrown fields or even neglected land.

Picture this: you’ve just acquired a new piece of land and you have grand plans for it. But you need to find a way to get it to a position where you can execute these plans. At this moment, you should turn to the flail.

What a Rotary Cutter is For

Rotary cutters are designed to be a quick and ready-made solution for those landscaping that need a fast, rough cut. The name, including ‘cutter’ and not ‘mower’, implies that the cut is more rugged as opposed to a more measured and manicured finish. Rotary cutters are primarily used for dealing with areas of dense vegetation, thick grass, and weeds. For a more manicured look, a grooming mower may be more appropriate.

Put simply, a rotary cutter can be considered the in-between of a lawn mower and a flail mower. More rugged and heavy-duty than your standard lawnmower, but not strong enough to deal with the sort of vegetation a flail is capable of dealing with.

When You Might Need a Rotary Cutter

If you manage or own a smallholding, a rotary cutter may be useful if particular areas have become overgrown with thick grass or weeds and you want a simple yet effective solution. If you’re cutting simply from a perspective of managing the vegetation, there are few better solutions than the rotary cutter.

If the areas of vegetation are populated with rocks, heavy brush or thick hedgerows, a rotary cutter may not be strong enough to break through. We would instead suggest a flail mower.
